Israeli Airstrike Reportedly Kills Senior Hezbollah Leader Near Beirut
Israel claims responsibility for killing top Hezbollah figure in October airstrike.
An Israeli airstrike near Beirut in early October reportedly killed Hashem Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah leader and potential successor to his cousin, Hassan Nasrallah, the former head of the militant group. Nasrallah was killed by Israel in a previous airstrike in late September.
The Israeli military confirmed on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024, that the airstrike targeted a meeting of senior Hezbollah figures in the Dahiya area of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. The bombing was described as one of the heaviest in the region since Nasrallah's death on September 27.
Despite Israel's announcement, Hezbollah has yet to issue an official confirmation of Safieddine’s death.
