Japan’s JICA Signs EGP 336M Deal to Fund Egypt’s Healthcare System

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a EGP 336 million deal with the Ministry of Finance to help fund Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).

The UHIS covers over 3,000 health services including surgical interventions, medical analyses, radiology scans, tumour treatments, organ transplantations and prosthetic devices. The system began experimentally in Port Said in 2018, and has been gradually rolling across the nation’s governorates, prioritising the lowest income citizens first. The UHIS is available in Port Said, Luxor and Ismailia, with plans to expand to Suez, Aswan and South Sinai in 2023.
