Journalists Syndicate Introduces Rules for Funeral Coverage

In response to growing concerns over intrusive media coverage at funerals, Egypt’s Journalists Syndicate has issued new guidelines aimed at preserving the dignity of mourning spaces. The initiative comes through a formal partnership with Sokna, a private company specialising in end-of-life services, and is supported by the Syndicate of Acting Professions.

Announced during a press conference, the new system introduces a credentialing process for photojournalists, complete with digital tracking codes for regulated funeral access. One of the core rules prohibits any filming within cemeteries. Separate protocols will apply to funerals held in public areas versus condolence gatherings in private venues, the latter now requiring direct consent from the deceased’s family.

The move follows mounting criticism of chaotic and invasive press conduct at high-profile funerals, particularly those of public figures. Families and industry professionals have increasingly called for safeguards to protect personal grief from media overexposure.

Sokna has published 10 specific guidelines for accredited press and will collaborate with both syndicates to oversee implementation. In addition to regulating coverage, the agreement grants Journalists Syndicate members structured access to Sokna’s services.
