Saudi's Ministry of Defense Intercepted Three Missiles Over Riyadh
As missiles target the capital, a new military tally reveals the scale of the ongoing conflict across the Gulf.
On Sunday, March 22nd, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence detected three ballistic missiles targeting the Riyadh Province. While one missile was intercepted mid-air, the remaining two reportedly fell in uninhabited areas, causing no casualties. Several drones were also intercepted above the country’s Eastern Province.
These strikes have been incorporated into a broader tally released by the Ministry of Defence. In its findings, the figures reveal that Saudi air defense units have successfully downed at least 438 hostile drones and 36 ballistic and cruise missiles since late February when the United States and Israeli forces launched a series of strikes in Iran.
In Saudi Arabia, the majority of strikes have been concentrated on the country’s energy-rich Eastern Province and the Shaybah oilfield. 278 of the intercepted drones were found to be targeting this region.
The UAE has reportedly absorbed the brunt of the offensive. As of mid-March, Emirati defense systems have intercepted more than 1,672 unmanned aerial vehicles and over 320 missiles.
On Wednesday, March 18th, an emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers took place in Riyadh in an effort to coordinate a unified response and explore avenues for a regional de-escalation.
