How to Find Your Stolen Phone through Egypt's New Initiative

Egypt’s Public Prosecution has introduced a new digital service aimed at helping citizens track lost or stolen mobile phones, as part of broader efforts to modernise access to judicial services and reduce reliance on in-person procedures.

The service, available via the Public Prosecution’s official online portal, allows users to submit and follow up on requests to track their devices after filing an initial police report. While the platform streamlines follow-up steps, filing a report at the police station where the incident occurred remains a mandatory first step.

When submitting the report, individuals are required to provide key details about the device, most importantly the IMEI number, which serves as a unique identifier. (This number may be found on the phone's box.) Supporting documents, such as the phone’s original packaging or proof of purchase, may also be requested to verify ownership.

Once the report is filed and referred to the Public Prosecution, users can access the online service to register a tracking request and monitor updates on their case, eliminating the need to visit prosecution offices in person.

To help track down the phone, telecom companies can identify the authorities if a new SIM card is inserted into the device, providing details such as the user's name, national ID number and address. This information is then used to support the investigation and locate the phone.

Upon locating the phone or the suspect, citizens can then follow up with the appropriate legal action to have their phones returned to them.
