Latest Figures Show Egypt Hosting 1.2 Million Sudanese Refugees
The figure is the latest to be provided by the Egyptian government to the UN Refugee Agency.
According to the latest figures provided by the Egyptian government to UNHCR, 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt since the war in Sudan began in April, 2023. This makes Egypt the country with the largest population of Sudanese people who have been displaced by the ongoing crisis, with Chad following, having received roughly half as many refugees.
In response, UNHCR, in partnership with the Egyptian government, launched a new program under the Joint Platform for Refugees and Migrants.
Supported by a EUR 12.2 million grant from the European Union, the program will be implemented by UNHCR in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the International Organization for Migration.
The initiative aims to assist the Egyptian government in providing essential services - such as healthcare and education - while enhancing protection for vulnerable refugees, migrants and asylum seekers.
