Ministry of Immigration to Allow Expats to Settle Conscription Status
For 5,000 US dollars or euros, Egyptians working or studying abroad can soon settle their conscription status.
Following requests from many Egyptians living abroad, the Ministry of Immigration has announced an initiative allowing young men between the ages of 18 and 30 to settle their conscription status during a two month period beginning on May 1st.
The settlement registration will be logged through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Expats looking to settle their conscription status will need to obtain a certificate from their local Egyptian embassy or consulate verifying their presence abroad. Applications will be approved upon receipt of payment of 5,000 dollars or euros to the account listed on the website.
This is a significant step for those working or studying abroad, as previously conscription status prevented the renewal of one's passport. With this new initiative, those who wish to remain abroad without returning to complete military service have a recourse to do so permanently.
