New Organ Transplant Unit Will Open in Kasr Al Ainy Hospital

A new organ transplant unit - which will be fully equipped to deliver liver, kidney, lung and heart transplantations from living or deceased donors - is being established at Kasr Al Ainy Hospital. The unit will be ready to receive patients within the next couple of months.

In November 2022, the Ministry of Health and Population issued a new form that will allow Egyptian citizens to officially declare their desire to become organ donors. Organ donation in Egypt has been subject to debate for years, with various views and official measures put in place to regulate it and the form was considered a step towards giving more people agency to make the decision within Egypt.

While Egypt is also getting its first organ transplant centre - which is set to be the largest in the Middle East with 12,000 operating rooms - that is still a long way away. This new unit in Kasr Al Ainy Hospital will help deliver numerous organ transplants until the larger high-tech centre is ready to receive patients.
