New Visitors Centre for Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi'i Opened
The Mausoleum of Imam Al-Shafi'i is one of Old Cairo’s most prominent religious and architectural landmarks.
A new visitors centre for the Mausoleum of Imam Al-Shafi'i in Old Cairo has been officially inaugurated, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into the history and restoration efforts at this significant site.
Imam Al-Shafi’i, a renowned Muslim theologian, writer, and scholar, was a key contributor to Islamic jurisprudence, having founded the Shafi‘i school of jurisprudence. The mausoleum stands as one of Cairo's most prominent religious and architectural landmarks.
Through the restoration work, previously undisclosed remnants of the Fatimid dome, concealed inscriptions, and decorative elements hidden under layers of modern paint have been unearthed, enriching the shrine's historical significance.
The centre also offers educational and artistic activities for children, allowing them to explore Egypt's history and Islamic civilization through stories, games and colouring workshops. The establishment of the Imam Al-Shafi'i Visitors Center aims to enhance the experience for tourists and visitors, improve service quality, and raise awareness within the local community.
With the recent opening of the mosque and shrine, the Mausoleum of Imam Al-Shafi'i is now prepared to welcome tourists, contributing to the growing number of archaeological attractions in Cairo. The visitors centre is the latest addition to restoration efforts in Old Cairo, following the restoration of Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim Mosque in Saladin Citadel.
