Red Sea Fishing Activities Temporarily Halted as Conservation Measure
The announcement comes as the Egyptian government aims to preserve fish stock and ensure a healthy ecosystem in the region.
Starting May 1st, the trading of Red Sea fish in markets and commercial stores has been halted in accordance with the fishing ban placed by the Red Sea Governorate.
Resolution No. 266 completely halts fishing activities as well as prohibits the trading of all Red Sea fish in fish markets and restaurants in the Red Sea region from May 1st, 2024, to July 15th, 2024.
The governorate aims to preserve the fish stock in the Red Sea waters by pausing various fishing activities along its shores, aligning with recommendations from relevant authorities. Additionally, the decision includes a halt on fishing for shrimp in the Gulf of Aqaba, the Gulf of Suez, the Hurghada region and its islands from May 5th until September 15th.
Strict penalties have been outlined for violators, including the suspension of fishing boat licenses, confiscation of equipment, and potential legal action.
