River Cleaning Project Opened in South Sudan by Egyptian Delegation
The Bahr Al-Ghazal River Cleaning Project is a collaborative effort between the Egyptian and South Sudanese governments.
Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam has inaugurated the Bahr Al-Ghazal River Cleaning Project in South Sudan, along with his South Sudanese counterpart Pal Mai Deng. The project is a cooperative effort between the Egyptian and South Sudanese governments, following similar projects from the Egyptian side to boost developmental efforts in South Sudan.
The project aims to remove aquatic weeds and other similar obstructive articles from the river to reduce flooding risks and to improve navigation capabilities along the waterway. Just over half of the 30 kilometre waterway has been cleared of obstructions so far. The clearing of the river will also further enable trade by allowing boats to navigate the river, and by allowing fishermen to again fish along the river thereby encouraging the country’s fishing industry.
