SAMA Bans Saudi Banks From Contacting Customers via WhatsApp

The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has announced a ban on banks contacting customers via WhatsApp, deeming it an unreliable communication channel and aiming to minimise the risks of fraud. Instead, the Saudi central bank has instructed banks to adopt safer communication methods, such as live chats on bank apps, chatbots or secure channels on their websites.

The central bank has also mandated that all banks ensure their employees comply with this new policy and conduct necessary assessments to ensure full adherence to the regulations.

In addition, the Media and Awareness Committee at Saudi Banks has recently warned against fraud schemes where criminals impersonate charitable organisations or legitimate financial service firms. The committee highlighted that recognised institutions do not solicit donations through social media or messaging apps and cautioned against fake documents used to deceive victims.
