Saudi Ministry Expands Chia Cultivation for Sustainable Farming
The chia plant, now growing in regions like Makkah and Taif, supports Saudi Arabia’s agricultural diversification and water-efficient farming.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has expanded chia cultivation across Saudi Arabia, introducing the crop to regions with suitable climatic conditions, including Makkah and Taif. The initiative aligns with efforts to diversify agriculture, improve food security, and promote sustainable water use in the Kingdom.
Originally from Central America, chia is well-adapted to warm climates, thriving in temperatures between 15-30°C. Its low water requirements and high pollination rate make it a viable crop for Saudi Arabia’s arid environment. The plant has shown promising growth in Taif Governorate, marking a step toward broader production.
Chia is used in food and beverages, cosmetics, and natural oils, contributing to various industries within the Kingdom. As the ministry explores alternative crops to enhance local agriculture, the cultivation of chia reflects a shift toward more sustainable and resource-efficient farming practices.
