Saudi Riyal Gains Official Symbol to Standardise Currency Identity
Rooted in Arabic calligraphy, the newly introduced Saudi riyal symbol aims to enhance the currency’s visibility in markets.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has approved the official symbol for the Saudi riyal, a move aimed at reinforcing the national currency’s identity across financial markets. The implementation of the new symbol will take place gradually, integrating it into financial and commercial transactions in coordination with relevant authorities.
Developed to the highest technical standards, the design of the symbol is rooted in Arabic calligraphy that mirrors Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage. The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has recognised the contributions of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization in the development process.
