Second Trial for Hydrogen Bus to Transport Pilgrims Begins in Makkah
The trial uses a mobile refuelling station, with buses offering a 500 km range and under-15-minute refuelling.
The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites has launched a second hydrogen bus trial in partnership with energy, transport and safety authorities. This phase builds on the initial trial with a target of zero-emission transport solution for pilgrims.
The trial uses a mobile refuelling station, with buses offering a 500 km range and under-15-minute refuelling. Safety protocols overseen by the Civil Defense and Traffic teams include leak detection and fire-resistant materials. The new buses will operate on pre-authorised roads, circumventing overcrowded roads during peak pilgrimage.
The initial phase revealed that 89% of passengers were satisfied with the rides, due to quiet and smooth travel.
