Sharjah Police Launch SOS Smartwatch to Monitor Drug Users' Recovery
The smartwatch monitors vital signs, detects health risks, and alerts authorities in case of emergency, aiding post-treatment rehabilitation.
Sharjah Police have introduced a SOS smartwatch to aid in tracking and supporting the rehabilitation of drug users. The device, developed by First Lieutenant Pharmacist Sarah Al Zarouni, is designed to monitor users’ vital signs, detect signs of overdose, and provide emergency assistance through a built-in SOS system.
The smartwatch is equipped with GPS tracking, enabling authorities to monitor the location of users, while also detecting physical indicators like irregular heart rate, abnormal breathing and low activity levels - signals of potential overdose. In the event of an emergency, the device can automatically alert emergency responders.
This technology is part of Sharjah’s broader efforts to tackle addiction and improve rehabilitation outcomes. The smartwatch, which costs around AED 150,000, is provided free to those enrolled in addiction treatment programs, offering a solution that allows patients to continue their recovery at home with family support, rather than in a rehabilitation center.
In addition to its health-monitoring features, the smartwatch serves as a follow-up tool for individuals post-rehabilitation. It tracks vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and stress levels, enabling Sharjah Police to ensure patients are adhering to their recovery plans.
Sharjah Police are responsible for overseeing the monitoring of these devices. To participate in the program, individuals must pledge to adhere to rehabilitation guidelines. Failure to comply will lead to legal consequences, and a specialist will intervene if the device is tampered with.
