The Suez Canal Will Officially Go Green by 2030
Plans are in place to convert the extension stations along the Canal to run on solar and wind energy.
The Suez Canal Authority has announced the adoption of a sustainable development plan, which aims to officially declare the Suez Canal green by 2030.
In furthering this goal, the Authority has begun concluding contracts to supply passing ships with green fuel at East Port Said Port. Plans are also in place to convert the extension stations along the Canal to run on solar and wind energy.
The Suez Canal is one of the world’s strategic shipping lines and the adoption of a green strategy aims to further the efforts of the Egyptian State as well as the International Maritime Organization to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping sector.
The COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022 saw a number of countries pledge themselves towards the goal of a decarbonised maritime industry.
