Transportation System Along the Nile Will Undergo Major Development

The Ministry of Transport and the office of the Prime Minister have revealed a new major development plan for a transportation system across the Nile, addressing environmental, economic and safety concerns.

For cargo transport, the strategy involves the construction of advanced river units that conform to global standards. These units boast substantial advantages, notably a 64% reduction in fuel consumption and alleviation of road congestion concerns.

In terms of passenger safety, pedestrian bridges will replace mechanical ferries, while 442 ferries will be modernised. 408 river berths and 26  river buses will also be upgraded while improving employee qualifications to raise safety standards. The Ministry of Transport also aims to digitise licences by the end of 2023, introduce electronic maps and encourage private sector engagement and strategic goods transportation.

The development plan’s overarching focus remains on achieving transport efficiency and operational optimization. By capitalising on the Nile’s potential, the plan envisions a streamlined river port landscape and the activation of a unified transport system.
