Bassam Hassan, Egyptian Plenipotentiary and director of Arms Control and Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, has been elected to lead a United Nations team to draft a treaty that would help prevent an arms race in outer space.
The new team will follow the outline of a 1981 UN resolution entitled ‘The Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space’, which serves as a reaffirmation of the cornerstone principles enshrined in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The team will work until August 2024 to provide recommendations to the UN General Assembly on how to draft the treaty.
