US President Trump Proposes American Takeover of Gaza Strip

US President Donald Trump announced his proposal for an American takeover of the Gaza Strip during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu.

“We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” the 47th US president said, claiming the American take-over could “create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.” Trump, a long-time New York real estate developer, described his vision of turning Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East,” with “world-class” construction sites.

The statements come after Trump also ordered a halt to Palestinian relief agency UNRWA funding, advocated for the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, and oversaw the U.S. withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council. In response, Egypt and several Arab leaders issued statements, including Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, who declared, “The displacement of the Palestinian people is an injustice we cannot take part in.”

Israeli and Palestinian leaders have since met for phase two of the three-phase Gaza ceasefire deal also started on February 4th, Hamas leaders announced.
