US Threatens Aid Cuts if Egypt & Jordan Reject Gaza Displacement Plan

US President Donald Trump signaled he may withhold American aid to Egypt and Jordan if they refuse to accept Palestinians displaced from Gaza. In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that those leaving Gaza would not have the right to return, adding that the US would support establishing a "permanent place" for them elsewhere.

In fiscal year 2023, the United States provided Jordan with nearly USD 1.7 billion in aid. Egypt received USD 1.3 billion in military assistance in 2024. The United States is required to provide a certain level of military aid to Egypt after the signing of the 1978 Camp David Accords and the 1979 Egypt-Israel Treaty of Peace. In January 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a halt to most foreign aid, with exceptions for Israel and Egypt.

US President Trump also warned Hamas that if all Israeli hostages in Gaza are not released by Saturday, "all hell is going to break out." His remarks follow Hamas’ announcement that the release of three hostages was delayed due to Israel breaking the terms of the ceasefire due to its continued military assaults and restrictions of aid flows.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing the protection of Palestinian rights, while over 110 NGOs condemned any forced displacement. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described his recent meeting with Trump as "the most significant" he has had with a US president.
