USD 32 Billion Waste & Recycling Plan Announced in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has announced a major waste and recycling plan, which is expected to add USD 32 billion to the country's GDP by recycling up to 100 million tonnes of waste per year.

The plan is expected to create job opportunities for more than 100,000 Saudi workers. Since the recycling rate in the kingdom is currently amongst the lowest globally, at 3% to 4%, the plan hopes to develop the kingdom's waste management and sector in order to raise the recycling rate to 95%.

The Kingdom has outlined several plans and strategies to make the country more sustainable, such as the National Environment Strategy, which is made up of 65 initiatives and backed by USD 14.6 billion in investments.
