The world's first solar-powered wholesale market has opened in Alexandria. The El-Amreya Wholesale Fruits and Vegetable Market is the site of an energy-efficient pilot project from MAIA-TAQA, an international NGO that looks to raise awareness of resource efficient practices and policies among SMEs and policy makers in the region. The project was implemented in partnership with Alexandria University and the European Union, as part of a larger effort to improve energy efficiency in the city's public buildings. The project includes a 100kw solar cell unit, and is linked to an energy grid that will allow it to sell any generated surplus.
