Sameh Alaa’s Latest Animated Short Selected for Toronto Film Fest.
The film marks Alaa’s second animated short after ‘S the Wolf’ and is co-directed by French animation director Robin Vouters.
Acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker Sameh Alaa’s latest short ‘The Day I Smoked a Cigarette With My Father’ is officially selected for Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts programme.
The film marks Alaa’s second animated short after ‘S the Wolf’ and is co-directed by French animation director Robin Vouters. The new short is also Alaa’s second time at TIFF after his short film ‘Fifteen’ was also selected in 2017.

Alaa is most known for his Cannes-winning short film ‘I’m Afraid to Forget Your Face’ which won the Palme d’Or at the festival in 2020.
His previous animated short ‘S the Wolf’ received numerous awards regionally and locally, and it seems like he will continue exploring the medium.
The story follows a 12 year old boy, named Alaa, and his three younger siblings and how they deal with their father’s sudden disappearance.
Sameh Alaa is also known for the hit Ramadan hit drama ‘Hekayet Narges’ (2026) which was his first mainstream venture outside the indie festival circuit.
