Two Egyptian Documentaries Selected for GFF
'The Return of Captain Kabonga' and 'Big Boys Don't Cry' premiere at El Gouna, tackling wrestling and masculinity in Egypt.
Egyptian filmmaker Amir El Shennawy’s feature documentary The Return of Captain Kabonga will have its world premiere at the ninth edition of El Gouna Film Festival, running from October 15th to 23rd.
Set against the backdrop of Egypt’s economic crisis, the independent documentary follows a group of amateur wrestlers from Ismailia and their veteran coach ‘Ashraf Kabonga’ as they chase a WWE-style wrestling dream.
The film received development support from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and CineGouna Funding.
Documentary film ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’ is also a long term project that explores themes of masculinity and weight lifting culture in Egypt.
