Inside Designer Yasmina Makram’s Summer Home on Egypt’s North Coast

Perched on the tranquil shores of Almaza Bay, on Egypt’s North Coast, Yasmina Makram’s summer home boasts sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Quickly becoming one of Egypt’s leading tastemakers in the realm of interior design, Makram’s personal retreat is a true reflection of her award-winning design approach and ethos - an effortless blend of simplicity, local craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for natural beauty.

The house welcomes its guests with a courtyard that sets the tone for the rest of the spaces. The tree resting within invites light and air into the home. It’s here where the Mediterranean first greets you as you look through the corridor, merging the indoor experience seamlessly with the outdoors.

The main living space unfolds as an open plan that includes a dining area and a salon. Makram’s approach is all about restraint; she avoids excessive decoration, instead opting for a minimalist aesthetic that feels both modern and timeless. A large artwork by Egyptian painter Ahmed Osman introduces a personal touch that ties the space together without overwhelming it.

Makram’s ability to blend modern design with nostalgic elements is evident throughout the house. Inspired by her and her husband’s upbringing in Agamy and Montaza, the home incorporates earthy tones, lush greenery and local materials that evoke a sense of place.

Throughout the house, Makram showcases a variety of design pieces, many of which are products of her studio. From the cane dining chairs that give off a 1960s feel to the Ethiopian bed linens that add texture and warmth, every element is chosen with intention.

The outdoor spaces are a natural extension of the indoor areas, designed to offer both relaxation and an intimate connection with nature. A carefully selected tree stands as a focal point, which Yasmina lovingly refers to as “the heart of the home.”

Flanking the house, a lush, verdant pathway offers a magical route that leads to the pool. The path is layered with textured greenery, as it culminates in a stunning reveal of the pool and an expansive view of the sea.

In Makram’s summer home, the Mediterranean isn’t merely a backdrop but a vital element of the design narrative. With its clean lines, natural materials, and lush greenery, it’s a testament to Makram’s talent for creating spaces that are as much about emotion as they are about aesthetics.
