Soleil Shines a New Light on Cruise Hospitality With Pharaonic Majesty
Egyptian designer Vanessa Victor reimagines ancient Egypt in her stunning cruise design, made to glide luxuriously on the Nile.
There’s a rhythm to the Nile, the soft slap of water against wood, the whisper of life along its ancient shores, and the breeze carrying secrets as old as the river itself. Aboard the Soleil, a homegrown Nile cruise ship gliding between Luxor and Aswan, that timeless rhythm becomes your guide. Recently reimagined by Egyptian architect and designer Vanessa Victor, founder of VV Design House, every detail of this boat - from its gilded railings to its eclectic blend of local fabrics - feels like a love letter to Egypt’s enduring spirit.
Dancing between the echoes of ancient Egypt and the bold strokes of modern design, Soleil’s shining white exterior gleams over the rippling water of the Nile. Stepping inside, the world softens - marble accents catch the light, rattan furniture breathes warmth, and textures collide in an exquisite dance of tradition and innovation. Unlike your more common cruise trips, this boat was designed as an ode to Egypt’s enduring artistry, reimagined for those who seek the romance of the river and the thrill of the unexpected.
“I deliberately embraced bold, 'in-your-face' elements that evoke Pharaonic culture, using them to create a striking contrast with the more modern, dominant features like the marble cladding and contemporary furniture,” Vanessa Victor, founder of VV Design House, tells SceneHome.
First greeted inside the double-height reception, this space was intentionally designed to evoke the luxurious grandeur of ancient Egyptian temples. To break away from the monotony of typical foyers and waiting areas, Victor reimagined the seating arrangement in a more open, airy layout. With the added central bar area, guests no longer just wait to check in - they can enjoy a drink while taking in the stunning views through the expansive windows.
“I envisioned the reception desk as a solid, carved marble block, but the weight would have exceeded the limits of the vessel. So, we designed it in a way that gives the illusion of solid marble, while staying within the boat’s structural constraints,” Victor explains.
Keen on achieving the eclectic feel that defines the reception and much of the space, Victor made sure to customise each furniture piece and lighting fixture to align with this vision. Pairing this with the fact that most of these pieces, with only a few exceptions, were locally manufactured imbues the cruise with a sense of pride, further embedding it in its cultural context.
“I wanted to draw from the timeless beauty of ancient Egyptian jewellery, so I integrated vibrant pops of turquoise and green, inspired by the semi-precious stones, to create a striking contrast against the earthy, beige-dominated atmosphere,” Victor adds.
Victor reimagined the boat’s original layout to align with the modern client’s expectations of luxury. A double height spa, complete with an indoor pool framed by a vast window offering uninterrupted views of the passing landscape, became the heart of relaxation on board. Wood-clad walls and travertine-covered floors embrace the space, wrapping it in warmth and richness.
Complementing this sanctuary are a sauna, a couples' massage room and a gym, thoughtfully added to elevate the experience and cater to the discerning tastes of the ship’s clientele.
Descending to the lower deck, the all-day dining restaurant was designed to accommodate all occupants at once. This section of the boat provides a distinctly different experience, with small windows positioned so close to the river that they offer an intimate view of the water’s gentle flow and the world skimming just above its surface.
This space is anchored by an array of columns clad in light beige wood, each flaring open at the crown, a design inspired by the lotus flower and palm leaf motifs of ancient Egypt. This intricate detail seamlessly blends the regal spirit of ancient Egypt with the restaurant's nature-infused atmosphere.
Above, the sun deck opens up to a completely different atmosphere. As you make your way up, the expansive views unfold, revealing the endless horizon and the vast sky. The pool glistens under the sun, inviting a refreshing dip, while the white chaise longues offer the perfect spot to relax. Whether basking in daylight or gazing at the stars with a book and warm drink in hand, this space invites you to lose yourself in the beauty of the Nile.
This full renovation project came with its fair share of challenges and constraints. Reflecting on the experience, Victor shares, “I believe renovation projects are among the most challenging. Working on a boat adds another layer of complexity. The technical constraints force you to adhere to strict structural regulations, making every design decision a delicate balance between creativity and compliance.”
Originally designed to host around 80 rooms, the boat underwent a significant transformation under Victor’s vision for a more luxurious experience. She reduced the number of rooms to around 50, incorporating 10 to 15 suites instead. This shift elevated the boat's niche appeal, creating more spacious, high-end accommodations that aligned seamlessly with her client’s refined needs.
“The success of Soleil stemmed from the owner's vision to break away from the conventional, granting us the freedom to explore and be creative,” Victor explains. “My goal was to craft a modern reinterpretation of ancient Egypt - honouring the richness of its history while creating a space that seamlessly blends comfort with contemporary functionality.”
