Al-Azhar Establishes Institute for Arabic Calligraphy

Al-Azhar has established a new Institute for Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation in Cairo following approval by the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar, chaired by Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb.

The institute will operate under the specialised education system of the Al-Azhar Institutes Sector, offering structured academic and practical training in Arabic calligraphy and Islamic ornamentation.

According to Al-Azhar, the programme is designed to prepare specialists with both theoretical knowledge and technical skills while contributing to the preservation and revival of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic decorative arts. It also aims to promote the cultural heritage and aesthetic traditions of these art forms among younger generations.

The institute's academic programme will run for three years, culminating in an intermediate technical qualification in Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation. Outstanding graduates will have the opportunity to continue their studies for an additional two years to earn a specialised certificate equivalent to a post-secondary qualification.

Admission will be open to students holding the Al-Azhar preparatory certificate or an equivalent qualification. Applicants will be required to pass written and oral entrance examinations, as well as a personal interview, before being admitted to the programme.
