Central Stray Dog Shelter to Open in Cairo by July 20th
A new central shelter will provide veterinary care and long-term management for stray dogs across Cairo.
A new central shelter for stray dogs is expected to open in Cairo by July 20th as part of a long-term strategy to manage the city's stray animal population through a more sustainable and humane approach.
Currently in its final stages of preparation, the facility will provide veterinary treatment, vaccinations and a safe environment for stray dogs. According to Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber, the project is intended to replace temporary solutions with a long-term system that improves public safety while promoting animal welfare.
The shelter is modelled on the facility in 15th of May City, one of Cairo's largest centres for the care of stray dogs, where animals are removed from the streets while receiving medical treatment and disease prevention services.
According to the governor, the long-term objective is to establish an integrated network of shelters across Cairo in partnership with government entities and civil society organisations. The wider programme aims to better manage the stray dog population, reduce the risk of disease transmission and ensure animals are treated in line with animal welfare principles.
