Digital Infrastructure Investment Tops EGP 600 Billion Over 10 Years

More than EGP 600 billion has been invested in digital infrastructure over the past 10 years, with spending focused on fibre optic networks, mobile coverage and international connectivity, according to Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hindi.

Speaking during the ‘Digital Egypt’ session at the Egypt 2026 forum, Hindi said work has included replacing copper networks with fibre, modernising exchanges and expanding fixed and mobile network routes. Fibre and copper network expansion has reached more than 3,000 kilometres annually as part of efforts to improve internet speeds and service quality.

Mobile infrastructure has also been expanded through additional fourth-generation capacity and preparations for fifth-generation services. Spectrum fees totalled USD 1 billion over the decade.

International connectivity has been strengthened through 10 additional submarine cables, upgrades to cable landing stations and new terrestrial routes connecting them. The ministry said the additional routes are intended to provide alternatives during disruptions and reduce risks to service continuity.

Network upgrades have also been carried out under the ‘Haya Karima’ initiative, including improvements to mobile base stations and the extension of fibre access to new areas. The works are intended to expand coverage and improve network efficiency in participating localities.
