Egypt Raises Household Electricity Prices by Average 12%
The government says it continues to subsidise household electricity bills, covering around EGP 100 billion annually.
Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has announced a new household electricity tariff, increasing residential electricity prices by an average of 12% while keeping the first consumption bracket unchanged.
According to the ministry, the revised pricing aims to maintain a stable electricity supply and ensure the financial sustainability of the country's power generation, transmission and distribution system, while taking social considerations into account.
The government says it continues to subsidise household electricity bills, covering around EGP 100 billion annually. Under the new tariff, households consuming up to 50 kWh pay around 25% of the actual cost of their bill, with the state covering the remainder.
The level of government support gradually decreases as consumption rises, until users consuming around 2,000 kWh per month pay the full cost of their electricity.
