Egypt to Build Two Solar Projects in Sudan as Power Link Expands

Two major solar power projects are planned in Sudan alongside an initial 75 MW electricity supply through the Egypt–Sudan interconnection, which is expected to be completed within five months.

Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Oil Moatasem Ibrahim said solar power is among the fastest options available to support the country’s electricity sector, particularly as the cost of rehabilitating conventional power stations has risen sharply.

Several solar projects are already under development, including a 10 MW plant in River Nile State, a 50 MW plant in Red Sea State and a 20 MW plant in Northern State. Ibrahim said Sudanese authorities are working with Egyptian companies and using Egyptian equipment and technical supplies across the sector.

Officials from both sides are also exploring wind power opportunities in northern areas with suitable potential.

According to Ibrahim, renewable energy expansion is primarily intended to support agriculture by giving farmers access to more reliable electricity, with the aim of increasing production, creating jobs and livelihoods, lowering food-production costs and improving supplies.

Sudan’s energy ministry is also working to rehabilitate the industrial sector and restore production inputs, with greater emphasis on hydropower and renewable energy.

Ibrahim said the war has caused extensive damage to electricity and oil infrastructure, including the destruction of around 14,000 electricity transformers in Khartoum and the shutdown of numerous oil fields for security reasons. He estimated that around 65% of the country’s oil and electricity sectors have been affected.

He also highlighted Egyptian support for training Sudanese personnel in energy and reconstruction, while noting that production inputs have been exempted from customs duties to encourage investment in the energy and electricity sectors.
