Egyptian-American Democrat Abdul El Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate
The former Michigan health official, born to Egyptian parents, becomes the first Muslim US senator following a campaign shaped by healthcare costs, the Gaza war and attacks on his faith.
Egyptian-American Democrat Abdul El Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate election, defeating Republican Mike Rogers. El Sayed announced the win on his Instagram this morning. The Associated Press currently reports El-Sayed securing 51% of the vote against Rogers’s 46%.
El Sayed, a former public health official whose parents immigrated from Egypt, becomes the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. He will succeed Democrat Gary Peters, who is retiring after 12 years in office.
His campaign centred on healthcare costs, economic inequality and opposition to US military aid to occupied Palestine. The race attracted national attention after President Donald Trump attacked El Sayed over his Muslim faith and his former Democratic primary opponent, Haley Stevens, endorsed Rogers days before the election.
