Heat Wave Forecast to Push Temperatures to 48°C in Egypt on May 16th
Forecasts indicate extreme heat in Cairo, Upper Egypt, and the New Valley, with ongoing monitoring ahead of the weekend.
An exceptional heat wave is forecast across Egypt on May 16th, 2026, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 48°C in Cairo, according to the Climate Information Center.
The warning was issued by the centre, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, based on preliminary weather models indicating a sharp rise in temperatures across multiple regions.
Forecasts suggest highs of 47°C in Siwa and 46°C in both Luxor and Mut in the New Valley, while Shalateen is expected to reach around 40°C.
On the northern coast, Marsa Matrouh is projected to remain significantly cooler at approximately 26°C. Officials said the projected increase spans wide areas, particularly across Upper Egypt and the New Valley, with conditions being monitored in real time as forecasts are refined ahead of the weekend.
The advisory is intended to prompt precautionary measures for both the public and the agricultural sector, amid concerns over heat stress and potential impacts on crops.
Authorities also flagged the possibility of increased pressure on energy systems if temperatures reach the forecast levels, noting that the coming days will be critical in confirming the intensity and duration of the heat wave.
