National Framework Launched to Link UAE Universities With Industry
A framework connecting universities with economic and industrial sectors looks to strengthen workforce alignment in the UAE.
A national framework designed to strengthen collaboration between universities and industry has been introduced in the UAE as part of wider efforts to align higher education outcomes with labour market needs.
The initiative was presented during a national virtual event titled ‘Bridging Economic Sector and Academia’, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s Industry-Academia Collaboration Working Group in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The event brought together 60 representatives from higher education institutions alongside participants from economic and industrial sectors.
The framework is built around three main tracks: an Industry Sabbatical Programme for academic staff, implementation of a work experience governance policy, and expanded participation by industry practitioners and specialists in university teaching and research.
According to the ministry, a study conducted by the working group in collaboration with industry partners found that 84% of respondents expressed interest in the Industry Sabbatical Programme, while 88% indicated willingness to participate in its 2026 pilot phase.
The pilot programme is scheduled to begin in June 2026 and will involve approximately 150 academic and teaching staff from three higher education institutions. Findings from the pilot are expected to inform a nationwide rollout planned for December 2026.
Introductory roadshows for the programme held in February and May involved 42 entities across 11 sectors and identified more than 380 hosting opportunities. Participating sectors included energy, retail, manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, construction, infrastructure, real estate, technology, banking, professional services and hospitality.
