Private & KG Teachers to be Trained in New Arabic Reading Programme
The programme will train private school and kindergarten teachers in a structured literacy method focused on phonemic awareness and comprehension.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge will launch a comprehensive training programme next year for private school and kindergarten teachers to strengthen Arabic reading instruction.
The programme is based on the Science of Reading, a research-led approach that breaks literacy development into structured stages, beginning with foundational skills such as recognising letter sounds and blending them into words before moving on to comprehension.
Mariam Al Halami, director of the private education sector at ADEK, said the programme will not be limited to a single age group. Grade 1 and Grade 2 students who are struggling with reading will receive the same structured support, beginning with phonemic awareness where needed.
Learning will be organised into levels, with teachers using a simple assessment tool to identify each child’s current stage and determine the next steps required. Teachers delivering the programme will undergo intensive certified training before applying the methodology in classrooms.
