Everything to Know About Al Ahly's Pre-Season First With Barcelona

Al Ahly is set to make history on August 19 when it faces Catalan giants FC Barcelona at Camp Nou for the Joan Gamper Trophy. It is the first meeting between the two clubs in the competition's history.

The Joan Gamper Trophy is Barcelona's annual pre-season opener, traditionally the club's first home fixture of the new campaign. It is more than a friendly. It is where established stars are welcomed back by home fans, and where new signings and young talent get their first run-out.

The trophy is named after FC Barcelona's Swiss founder, Joan Gamper, who also co-founded FC Zürich. The annual fixture stands as a tribute to his legacy. Each year, Barcelona invites a notable opponent to take part in one of its most celebrated pre-season traditions.

The fixture has hosted some of the world's biggest clubs, with recent opponents including Arsenal in 2019, Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 and Como most recently.

This year the honour goes to Egypt's Al Ahly SC.

Al Ahly becomes the first Arab and African club to feature in the Joan Gamper Trophy. It is a fitting nod to the Club of the Century's long record as one of the most decorated sides in football history.

There is an added layer of intrigue in Hamza Abdelkarim. Reports suggest he could join Barcelona's senior side for their pre-season camp, which would line the youngster up against the club where his journey began. The Al Ahly academy graduate became the first player to complete a direct transfer between the two clubs when he joined Barcelona Atlètic earlier this year.

The timing suits Al Ahly, coming off a summer that has raised global interest in Egyptian football.

Beyond the match itself, the meeting is seen as a chance for Barcelona to strengthen its presence in Egypt, where the club has a large and passionate fanbase.

The two clubs have met twice before, both in pre-season friendlies. The first came in Cairo during Al Ahly's centennial celebrations in 2007, followed by a second in 2009 for the Wembley Cup. Barcelona won both, 4-0 and 4-1.

Nearly two decades on, Al Ahly gets another shot at Barcelona, this time on one of the club's biggest stages.

Barcelona had looked at a few other clubs first, including Fulham. The Blaugrana decided against that fixture after the Premier League club appointed former Real Madrid player Álvaro Arbeloa as their new manager.

The match lands at a busy point for both sides. Al Ahly is preparing for the Egyptian Premier League season, which kicks off on August 20, while Barcelona will already be into their LaLiga campaign after a summer shaped by the World Cup calendar.

For Al Ahly, this is bigger than a pre-season fixture. It is a marker of Egyptian football's growing presence on the global stage.
