Egyptian Brand Nashwa Jewelry Has a New Ocean Inspired Collection

Nashwa Mostafa has spent the last four months developing her brand's latest Spring/Summer collection, El Niño, which continues the story she began with last year's Heatwave collection.

“Last summer, we had Heatwave. It was inspired by the intensity of summer, and it actually helped us that there was an actual heatwave in Egypt," she says. "This year, I asked myself, where did the heat go? I didn't want to end the story. I wanted something to continue it. So this year, we have El Niño."

The name comes from the natural phenomenon itself. “It's a condition where the heat actually goes under the ocean, and the ocean itself gets very warm," she explains. "Last year's heatwave didn't disappear. It went under the ocean, and 80% of what's under the ocean is still undiscovered. So we're here to discover and explore the undiscovered."

Mostafa is unveiling the collection gradually rather than all at once, releasing it in a series of drops that each explore a different corner of the underwater world, with six more looks still to come. "Last drop was full of blues, like the blue gems and the fish," she says. "The one before was the shrimp and the crab, with different colours."

Two designs, in particular, stand out as her personal favourites. "I would say the Ocean Palette Choker is one of my favourite pieces. Also, the Claw Earrings," she says. “It's literally a claw of a crab. It's 3D, so it's structured and sculpted in gold. It really captures my heart."

Mostafa’s new collection favours layering pieces that give each item a distinct personality. "People like jewellery that's playful. That was my objective with this collection. I wanted each piece to have its own character," she says. "This collection is also really about stacking, but stacking in a chic, sleek way."

The brand remains unwaveringly committed to using the highest quality metals, every piece is crafted in either sterling silver or pure gold. “All of our jewellery is handmade, and we do not work with anything but fine material" Mostafa says. "As long as the pieces are playful, we do not want to compromise on the materials."

This season, the brand's signature fish has been reimagined as a 3D sculptural object cast in brass, a material used only for ornamental pieces and never for the jewellery itself. Mostafa is gifting the pieces to her community. "It's a decorative piece that you can put in your home. You can even use it as a clutch," she adds.

With six looks still waiting to be unveiled, new drops will continue throughout August: "And that's why we say, stay tuned," Mostafa says. "We're not leaving until summer ends."
