Styled Archives: The ’80s Looks AI Can’t Recreate
Everyone’s asking AI for an ’80s makeover. These MENA icons were already there.
There’s a particular irony to the current obsession with turning perfectly ordinary photos into grainy, big-haired, technicolour ’80s fantasies. The decade has become an AI prompt, complete with oversized silhouettes, statement hair, saturated colour and enough shoulder volume to qualify as architecture. But long before anyone could type “make me look 1984” into a chatbot, MENA’s biggest stars were simply getting dressed.
From Egyptian cinema screens and television sets to magazine covers and music shoots, the region’s celebrities had their own version of the decade’s visual language. Some leaned into disco shimmer and dramatic beauty, others into sharp tailoring, folk-inspired details or the wonderfully relaxed menswear of the era. These are the original references, straight from the ’80s and requiring absolutely no filter.
Nadia El Gendy | 1980
Nadia El Gendy was not interested in blending into the background. In 'Al-Batniyya', the Egyptian actress wears a hot-pink satin dress with a plunging neckline, thigh-high slit and statement necklace. Then there’s the red, voluminous hair. Subtle was clearly not on the moodboard.
Souad Hosny | 1981
Soad Hosny takes the opposite approach in 'Ahl El-Qema'. The Egyptian actress wears a red-and-white gingham button-up with tiny studs and a soft, pulled-back hairstyle. It’s simple, charming and feels like the kind of outfit that could have walked straight off the screen and into someone’s wardrobe.
Yousra | 1983
Yousra is giving disco, and giving it in gold. The Egyptian actress wears a metallic camisole with a matching headband and long gold necklace, while her feathered hair brings the full early-’80s effect. Even the cigarette packet seems to have coordinated with the outfit.
Hussein Fahmy | 1983
Hussein Fahmy makes a strong case for the neckerchief. His tan corduroy blazer, open shirt and patterned silk scarf have that particular ’80s Egyptian leading-man formula down to a tee. And, of course, there’s the hair.
Samir Ghanem & Dalal Abdel Aziz | 1984
Samir Ghanem arrives in a coral-red jacket while Dalal Abdel Aziz keeps things soft in cream. Between his moustache and her feathered blowout, the photo practically comes with its own decade stamp.
Safaa Abu El-Saoud | 1984
Safaa Abu El-Saoud’s cream blouse gets its personality from the colourful geometric embroidery running across the neckline and sleeves. Paired with her big copper-toned hair, it’s a lovely example of ’80s styling meeting distinctly regional details.
Laila Eloui | 1986
Laila Eloui goes all in for the cover of Al Mawed. The Egyptian actress wears a bright yellow crochet top trimmed in orange and blue, topped with a row of colourful beads across her forehead. Her enormous, layered shag finishes what might be the most immediately ’80s look in the archive.
Iman Al-Toukhi & Mahmoud Abdel Aziz | 1986
On the set of 'Raafat Al-Haggan', Iman Al-Toukhi turns up in a navy blazer with strong shoulders, a red blouse and a tilted black beret. Beside her, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz keeps things more traditional in an olive blazer, cream shirt and striped tie. Two very different ways to do ’80s, in one frame.
Warda | 1987
Warda never needed shoulder pads to make an entrance. The Algerian-Egyptian singer wears a flowing embroidered kaftan, letting the fabric and detailing carry the look.
Amr Diab | 1989
Amr Diab closes out the decade in a colourful paisley shirt, worn open over a plain white T-shirt and dark trousers. Add the full curly hair and you have a late-’80s pop star in his natural habitat. No AI prompt necessary.
