Egypt Recovers President Sadat’s Passport Following US Auction

President Anwar Sadat’s diplomatic passport has been recovered from the United States by Egyptian authorities, after it was auctioned off by Texas-based Heritage Auctions.

The passport was reportedly sold for USD 47,500 on February 22nd, which prompted Sadat’s family to file an urgent statement to the Egyptian House of Representatives calling for an investigation into the sale. The passport was valid from 1979 until 1981, during which Sadat visited the United States and famously signed the Camp David Accords.

The diplomatic passport is now on display at Bibliotheca Alexandriana’s Sadat Museum alongside ten new items, including a key to Arish City in Sinai, which was gifted to the late president in 1979, and a trophy that had been given to Sadat by the Governor of Salzburg in 1978 to celebrate the peace treaty.
