First Intact Papyrus in Century Discovered in Saqqara

The papyrus, upon being restored and cleaned, was revealed to belong to the Book of the Dead.

Cairo Scene

For the first time in a century, an archeological dig in Saqqara has led to the discovery of an intact and preserved papyrus.

After the papyrus was cleaned and restored, the Supreme Council of Antiquities revealed that the papyrus contained some of the same writing that is found in the Book of the Dead - an ancient Egyptian funerary text that dictated the spells and prayers needed to guide the soul to the afterlife.

Work is already underway to translate the papyrus into Arabic so that it can be displayed at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.
