'The Swimmers' Makes Its MENA Debut at Cairo Int'l Film Festival

‘The Swimmers’, the star-studded drama depicting the real-life story of Syrian athletes Yusra and Sarah Mardini, will have its MENA region premiere at the Cairo International Film Festival, just a couple months after its world premiere opening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The film follows the journey of the Mardini sisters as they escaped war in Syria as refugees, and the struggle they went through to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Directed by Egyptian-Welsh filmmaker Sally El Hosainy, ‘The Swimmers’ features Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek, Palestinian actor Ali Suleiman, and Syrian actress Kinda Alloush. The heroic sister-duo, meanwhile, is played by real-life Lebanese sisters Manal and Nathalie Eissa.

‘The Swimmers’ will be screened at CIFF on November 16th, at 6:45 pm in the Grand Hall of the Cairo Opera House.
