World's Largest Man-made River Will Cultivate Egypt’s Western Desert

The Egyptian government is set to make history as it constructs the largest manmade river in the world. As part of the New Delta Project, the man-made river will help ensure Egypt's food security and cultivate approximately 2.2 million feddans within the Western Desert.

The 114-kilometer long river will deliver the necessary water for agriculture, using a combination of agricultural drainage, groundwater and surface water. The project's aim is to boost agricultural production and create job opportunities, especially in rural areas. In addition to cultivating new land, it will also help to protect existing agricultural land from encroaching urbanization.
