Earthquake Felt Across Cairo

If your sleep schedule betrayed you sometime around 7:30 in the morning, you may have felt the tremors of an earthquake across Cairo and many other Egyptian cities, like Alexandria and Assiut. Turns out we weren't alone. The tremors came from a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake, 127 kilometres off the Greek island of Karpathos in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The shaking went as far as Egypt, Lebanon, and even southern Turkey. No casualties or damages were reported as of this time.

Since it was a 'deep earthquake', it's easier to feel across a wider area. No tsunamis or strong aftershocks are expected, according to a professor from Athens University.

This is the second such earthquake felt by Egyptians this month, after Crete - an island 460 kilometres away from Egypt's Marsa Matrouh - experienced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on October 12th.
