Eclipse: Lab59 Architects’ Conceptual Desert Dwelling

Overlooking the rugged topography of the Saudi Arabian desert, this conceptual project by Cairo-based studio Lab59 Architects addresses the challenges of design in arid environments while being inspired by its context. Meant to intensify the desert experience as it appears to eclipse its terrain, the design plays around with light and shadow, solids and voids to offer a blend between solitude and connection.

“It’s like a barrier that veils the view from the streets using a solid continuous wall,” Founder Yassin El Hamaky tells #SceneHome of the design which got a finalist mention at the Young Architects Competitions. El Hamaky founded Lab59 in 2007 alongside Nour El Deen Khaled, and relaunched it in 2014. From there, the studio went on to design a plethora of major real estate projects from Egypt to Brazil. “Bent entrances urge visitors to explore what’s beyond that wall,” he adds.

Architecturally speaking, the design is all about linear lines that split the project into zones aligned to a single pathway. “The zones are oriented towards the desert and linked to the landscape through panoramic openings. Skylights and courtyards establish a connection with the surroundings,” he explains. “The indoor skylights frame pristine blue skies and striking rock formations.” Here El Hamaky refers to the design feature that would help provide natural ventilation, and a daylight that creates a dramatic spatial play of shadows.

The desert dwelling is divided into three masses under one roof that provides shade. Two levels were developed for main functions such as the Majlis and dining. Landscape plazas were extended inside the building to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces while offering stunning visuals of the endless expanse of desert, hills and water pools.
