Independent films rarely get the spotlight of blockbuster releases or mainstream platforms, but that hasn’t stopped them from finding their way to audiences. In recent years, indie streaming platforms have carved out a space for unconventional voices from the MENA region and beyond. Here are some of the Arab platforms bringing independent cinema straight to viewers everywhere...

Aflamuna

Aflamuna is a non-profit streaming platform that aims to share independent films from the Arab region with audiences all around the world. Supported by The Ford Foundation and CNC, Aflamuna selects obscure films and screens them for about two weeks free of charge.

Watermelon Pictures

Focusing on Palestinian films specifically and marginalised voices in general, Watermelon Pictures aims to amplify voices from underrepresented communities and distribute their works in theatres, from award-winning documentaries to hidden gems. Audience can either purchase each film individually or get a Watermelon + monthly subscription for EGP 148.53 a month

Shasha

Fully operated by a small team of women, Shasha aims to present a carefully-curated selection and exclusive films from in and around the SWANA region to a global audience. Audience can access films by paying a EUR 9.99 monthly subscription. All movies are available in their original language with English subtitles.

Istikana

A Subscription Video on Demand platform, Istikana showcases an extensive selection of  never-seen-before independent films, documentaries, short films, hard to find classics, and more for anyone who signs up for their EGP 140 monthly subscription.

Basita

Basita is a hybrid events platform that connects creators, institutions and venues with their audiences both physically and virtually. It offers a list of independent films from all around the MENA region, many of which are free.

Waqtona

Waqtona is the first accessible, ad-free online platform in Palestine dedicated to children and youth, offering a diverse selection of films. The platform features a carefully curated range of educational and entertaining content, bringing a variety of cultural perspectives to Palestinian audiences.
