Egypt Spends EGP 10.3 Billion on Worker Protection Since 2014
The funding supported informal workers, emergency relief and businesses between 2014 and mid-2026.
The Ministry of Labor said it allocated more than EGP 10.284 billion to social and health protection programmes for workers between 2014 and June 30th, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen social safety nets and support employment stability.
According to a ministry report, informal workers received the largest share of funding through the Central Account for Social and Health Care for Informal Workers, which disbursed EGP 7.275 billion over the period. This included EGP 4.994 billion in periodic and seasonal grants, EGP 763.4 million for social welfare, EGP 37.2 million for healthcare and medical treatment, and EGP 108.3 million in exceptional grants for workplace accidents.
The account also allocated EGP 1.371 billion in emergency assistance to informal workers during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the ministry.
Separately, the Workers' Emergency Relief Fund distributed EGP 2.576 billion to businesses experiencing financial difficulties, supporting 441,600 workers across 3,999 establishments. The ministry said the funding formed part of wider programmes aimed at preserving jobs and strengthening worker protection across the labour market.
