Amr Salama: A Legacy of Discovering Egypt's Brightest Stars

Acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker, writer, director Amr Salama is famous for his thought-provoking films - but what has perhaps gone underappreciated is his knack for unearthing raw untapped talent, with his films often featuring an unexpected acting debut that goes on to flourish in the industry. His newest venture, ‘Casting’, aims the spotlight behind the scenes and shows us how he discovers Egypt’s next generation of stars.

“The idea for the show originated with Mr. Ahmed Faik, head of content at United Media Services,” Amr Salama tells CairoScene. “Our goal was to discover fresh faces, actors who are talented, committed and versatile, to star in a brand-new TV show.”

This series, featuring a new story and characters in every episode, will showcase the actors of ‘Casting’. “These actors need to demonstrate diversity, flexibility, charisma, and the potential to become future stars,” Salama says. “The ones who impress me are those with real passion, commitment, and natural talent - people who are willing to work on themselves and have something special we can connect with.” Expressive features, especially the eyes, are key indicators for Salama, who believes emotions should be felt through an actor’s gaze.

He also emphasises the need for reform in Egypt’s casting process. “The problem lies in opting for easy options - casting someone to repeat a role they’ve already done.” For Salama, casting should involve multiple stages, effort, and skilled casting directors. Through his new production, Salama aims to challenge these norms and create a new standard for discovering talent in Egypt.

From child prodigies to breakout actors, it’s worth taking a moment to revisit the remarkable actors’ Salama introduced to our screens…

Ahmed Dash

Lamo'akza (2014)

Ahmed Dash made his debut at 14 in the film ‘Excuse My French’ (‘Lamo'akza’). Dash’s charismatic performance as a young kid thriving for acceptance and navigating culturally fraught circumstances captivated audiences and industry insiders alike. Currently, Dash boasts 27 roles under his belt, including a guest appearance in Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’.

Omar Sherif

Barra El-Manhag (2021)

Not to be mistaken for his legendary namesake, this child star kicked-off his rise to stardom in Salama’s orchestration of ‘Extracurricular’ (‘Barra El-Manhag’). Sherif’s delivery was nuanced; steering between fear and courage so effortlessly as a 13-year-old wunderkind.

Salma Abu Deif

Sheikh Jackson (2017)

Abu Deif had her breakout moment in Salama’s ‘Sheikh Jackson’, playing the teenage crush of the titular character whilst embodying the essence of youthful innocence. Abu Deif’s subsequent success led to a flourishing acting streak, including starring in her first lead role last Ramadan in ‘Ala Nesbet Moshahda’.

Wegz

Bimbo (2021)

The beloved Egyptian rapper made a striking acting debut in Salama’s ‘Bimbo’, showcasing new dimensions to his talent we have never seen before. He portrayed the role of the side-kick with an authenticity and rawness that made us fall in love with the character.

Ahmed Amin

Ma Waraa Al Tabi’a (2020)

Already well renowned as a comedy star, all the way back from the days of Al Plateau, Amin delivered a haunting performance in ‘Paranormal’ (Ma Waraa Al Tabi’a) that silenced prior scepticism. Playing the role of Dr. Refaat Ismail, the beloved literary character encountering the supernatural, Amin exhibited a priorly untapped facet of his potential.

Aly Kassem

Tayea’ (2018)

Kassem’s portrayal of Dahy in the television series ‘Tayae’, marked his breakout moment in the industry. His depiction of a character, torn between familial obligations and personal desires in Upper Egypt, resonated with audiences.
