The new ‘Cairo’ edition of Slanted showcases Egyptian designers across type, print, graphics and architecture in a 224-page publication.
German design publication Slanted has released the 46th edition of its magazine, a 224-page issue dedicated entirely to Egyptian design. Titled ‘Cairo’, the publication spans type, print, architecture and graphic work, presenting a cross-section of contemporary creative practice in Egypt. Designers were invited to add their own accompanying texts, giving them space to contextualise their work on their own terms rather than through a foreign lens.
Slanted typically centres each issue on a single city or a particular design movement, with past editions focusing on ‘Prague’, ‘Experimental Type’ and ‘Books’. The new ‘Cairo’ issue is now available at Diwan Bookstores and at Rizo Masr’s design studio in Maadi.
Ntsal Chamber of Design
Founded by Nardine Shenouda, Ntsal is a design studio — or design chamber — centred on sustainable design innovation. The practice aims to create work that is both distinctive and enduring. Recent projects include the visual identity for the 18th Panorama of European Film in Cairo, the third Cairo Art Book Fair, jewellery brand Jude Benhalim, and haircare label Avrelle. Ntsal also co-created the short film ‘Cairo Unscripted — Exploring Cairo’s Past, Present, and Creative Future’ with Slanted to mark the release of the magazine’s 'Cairo' issue.
Rizo Masr
Rizo is a print studio based in the practice of risograph printing, but that often also ventures out into other practices. Their work is produced by both in-house designers and contributing artists from all over the region. Rizo’s Franco Dictionary and SEEEN Mag are featured in Slanted.
Negmedine Khaled
Negmedine is a self-taught Arabic calligrapher who has devoted his practice entirely to the craft. His work — seen in collaborations with Azza Fahmy and the GrEEK Campus — is grounded in classical forms while remaining fluid and contemporary. He also partnered with Slanted and streetwear brand Reell to create a hoodie celebrating the release of the magazine’s 'Cairo' issue.
Rana Wassef
Rana Wassef’s practice moves between academic research and independent experimentation, sitting at the intersection of design, curation, art direction and teaching. Her publication ‘The Unreliable Scientific Method to Memory and Material Culture’ is featured in the new Slanted issue.
Waleed Osama
Waleed Osama is a graphic and type designer whose work often plays with or around standout phrases in Egyptian culture, like his featured design ‘Khalawees’ - the playful warning given when playing hide and seek. Slanted also featured his poster ‘Qaleel Da’em Afdal Men Katheer Motaqate’’.
Amr Alngmah
Multidisciplinary artist Amr Alngmah’s visual project ‘Video Games Nostalgia Series’ explores the stories video games tell beyond gameplay by incorporating nostalgic game characters into Islamic miniature art tapestries.
Wissa Wassef Art Centre
Renowned tapestry learning centre Wissa Wassef is featured in Slanted magazine, with two colourful tapestries displayed: ‘Irrigation Tools’ and ‘Changes’.
Hassan Ghonim
Hassan Ghonim is a Cairo-based photographer currently working on a long-term project exploring the boundaries of gender stereotypes in Egypt. His image spread ‘Unseen Manhood’ is featured in Slanted.
Celine Raffy
Celine Raffy’s work leans into the fantastical, with comic-style illustrations that live largely in her own imagination, touched by only small elements of reality. Her piece ‘Ko Banzeen’ appears in the new Slanted issue, though many readers may recognise her style from the cover of Naguib Mahfouz’s ‘Al Tantheem Al Sirry’, published by Diwan.
Amr Bakr & Alaa El Hadidy
Together, type designers Amr Bakr and Alaa El Hadidy — the recent winner of the Cairo Design Award 2025 — created ‘Moreeh’, a two-page text-based spread in Slanted. The artwork brings Arabic and Latin script together at deliberately disorienting angles, exploring how traditional Naskh can be pushed and contemporised through form and composition.
