Manal AlDowayan Selected as Saudi Artist at Venice Biennale 2024
AlDowayan’s work has previously been shown at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the British Museum.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has selected renowned artist Manal AlDowayan as its representative for the 2024 Venice Biennale, marking the kingdom’s fourth participation in the influential art fair.
Born in Dhahran and educated internationally, AlDowayan interrogates her native country's socio-political history through photography, installations and more, with her practice challenging women's roles in power. An experienced researcher, AlDowayan has shown globally at institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the British Museum.
Previous works have explored collective memory, oppression and intergenerational narratives – sometimes inviting audience participation to reclaim stories. AlDowayan’s two-decade career belies Saudi’s transformation, giving her a unique platform. Her commission will complement the Biennale theme on cultural disparities.
